Won’t European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) provide adequate protection?(Note that on 31 December 2005, the old FormE111 ceased to be valid. These paper forms havebeen replaced by the EHIC. In the new systemone card is needed for each member of the family.Public healthcare systems in the EU vary fromcountry to country, and few countries pay the fullcost of healthcare and these arrangements do notcover the cost of emergency medical repatriationback to the UK if this becomes necessary. Inaddition, a medical emergency may mean extratravel and accommodation costs which will not bereimbursed by the EHIC system. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office thereforeadvises that EHIC medical system is not asubstitute for a proper travel insurance policy.Only state-provided emergency treatment iscovered, and you will only receive treatment onthe same terms as the nationals of the countryyou are visiting. Private treatment is generally notcovered, and state-provided treatment may notcover all the things that you would expect toreceive free from the NHS. For more informationon the EHIC visit the Foreign and CommonwealthOffice website.
